What are these? For several reasons, none of which have much to do with music, performances are sometimes published using pseudonyms.

In most cases, a recording will be licensed to several publishers simultaneously, each using a different name to give the illusion that each label has its own roster. In one case (Koussevitzky / Anon) there was an attempt to avoid competing with a later recording by the same artist. In another, it was some sort of mistake (Swarowsky 59 / Gielen). And the Alfred Scholz case needs a page of its own (on John Berky's amazing Bruckner Symphony Versions Discography site).

Disreputable? Other cases are more troubling. There are clear attempts to mislead, "Ernesto Cantelli" and "Alfred Gehardt" impersonating Guido Cantelli and Charles Gerhardt. Worse is [Schuricht 41 / Anon], where it appears that RCA Victor contracted with Deutsche Grammophon while Hitler was bombing Britain. I realize that other US coporations did similarly, and worse, but this is still odious.

Troubling in a different way is the use of actual living conductor's names. There really are conductors named Libor Pesek and Walter Attanasi -- why are their names being attached to the work of others? (That page credits Attanasi with having recorded a Beethoven cycle, but I have yet to find it.)
